Women and girls around the world are making tremendous efforts to forge a more equal future and recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. They are on the front lines of the Covid-19 crisis as health workers, caregivers, innovators and community organizers.
Women leaders and women’s organizations have demonstrated their skills, knowledge and networks to effectively lead Covid-19 response and recovery efforts. They bring different experiences, perspectives and skills, and they are indispensable contributors to decisions, policies and laws that work best for all.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, new barriers to women’s participation and leadership have emerged: increased domestic violence, unpaid care work, unemployment and poverty. Despite the fact that women constitute the majority of frontline staff, there is disproportionate and inadequate representation of women in national and global policy spaces related to Covid-19.
To uphold women’s rights and fully harness the potential of their leadership in pandemic preparedness and response, the perspectives of women and girls in all their diversity must be integrated into the formulation and implementation of policies and programs in all spheres and at all stages of pandemic response and recovery.
