The El Pino de Obregón Special Education Center is leading, together with the UEMC e Indisvallan innovative research on the effects of adapted bicycles on children and young people with severe disabilities.

Fundación Personas, in its commitment to innovation and the welfare of people with disabilities, has actively participated in a pioneering study that demonstrates the benefits of adapted bicycles on the health of children and young people with severe disabilities. The research, carried out in collaboration with the European University Miguel de Cervantes (UEMC) and the Indisvall association, included 24 students from the El Pino de Obregón Special Education Center, managed by Fundación Personas Valladolid.
The study analyzes how physical activity with adapted bicycles and co-pilot tandems improves muscle toning, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory response of participants. These findings underscore the positive impact of adapted activities on the quality of life of people with disabilities.
A commitment to accessibility and innovation
Fundación Personas is especially appreciative of the collaboration of the school physiotherapists, who adjusted the bicycles to ensure the safety and comfort of the users. Preliminary results show a significant increase in the activity of postural muscles, such as the trapezius muscles, which favors motor functions and the performance of daily activities. In addition, the use of co-pilot tandems increases cardiovascular activity, demonstrating the physical exertion and added benefits of this activity.
Future projects: beyond the studio
The promising findings have prompted new projects, such as “BIKID” and “RuralBike“, in which Fundación Personas will continue to collaborate to analyze the benefits of adapted bicycles in the medium term. These initiatives will seek to consolidate their impact on health, functionality and social participation, expanding opportunities for people with severe disabilities.
