The Gang Program, located within the Leisure Service of Fundación Personas Valladolid, is a specific and organized resource, guided by principles of normalization and social inclusion, which develops a continuous program of leisure activities whose ultimate purpose is the enjoyment of people with intellectual disabilities.
Cristina Camell interviewed Lidia Losada Álvarez, coordinator of the program Pandillas Fundación Personas, Cecilia Santos Viña, volunteer, Omar García Vega and Elisa Vega González, participants in the program Pandillas, on the program Vamos a Ver on RTVCYL.
The gangs are groups of people who participate in different leisure alternatives in the city, while creating bonds of friendship, meeting new people, promoting self-determination, autonomy, independence, decision making, behavioral guidelines… taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the environment and the community.
The gang is usually made up of 10-15 participants, a hired monitor and one or more volunteers (depending on the characteristics and support of the group), and meets once a week, mainly on Saturday afternoons, for a duration of two and a half hours.
Each group establishes a meeting place (we try not to have more than one group at the same time), in which we try to find a well-known place in our city, with easy accessibility (bus stops). This meeting point is usually also the place where the families meet at the end of the activity.
They can go to movies, sporting events, theater, museums, concerts, restaurants… just like any group of friends.
The objective of this program is to encourage the creation of groups of friends and facilitate the necessary support to develop the different activities they wish to carry out.
