They met, the director of Plena Inclusion Spain, Enrique Galvan, and Miguel Angel Verdugo, Professor of Disability at the University of Salamanca who directs the University Institute of Community Integration, INICO. We share here the reflections from Plena inclusion have published.
The new definition of intellectual disability
From now on, this is how we understand intellectual disability:
- It is the limitation of intellectual functioning. That is, you have difficulty understanding or reasoning.
- It is a limitation of adaptive behavior, in areas such as concepts, social relationships or practices. For example: you find it difficult to adapt to changes that occur in your family, at work or in the world.
- All of this occurs before the age of 22.
Why is this change important?
This is very important for people with intellectual disabilities themselves, their families and the people who support them. It is very important because it changes:
- Our understanding ofintellectual disability.
- How to support people with disabilities.
- Aids given to persons with disabilities.
