JORGE MARTIN HERRERA and MIGUEL A. ESTEBAN – COACHES, together with JOSE ANTONIO ANDRÉS and VICTOR GAGO RODRIGUEZ – PLAYERS have shared with Cristina Camell the section “Extraordinary People” in the regional program Vamos a Ver.
WHAT?
The Adapted Handball team is a project between CD Balonmano Zamora and Fundación Personas Zamora whose main objective is to promote the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities through the practice of handball.
WHEN?
Both organizations have a long history in the province, having previously collaborated on numerous occasions, laying the foundations for what is now a reality.
In September 2018, first team player Jorge Martín “Jortos” contacted Fundación Personas Zamora to raise the possibility of creating an Adapted Handball team.
It started during the 2018 – 2019 season. Currently, the adapted handball team trains once a week and has more than 16 players.
WHO? HOW?
In general, the involvement of CD Balonmano Zamora has been fantastic.
In addition, the training sessions are always complemented by employees of the Family and Sports Service of Fundación Personas, who support the regular development of the session.
WHY?
In recent years, sports have become an excellent vehicle for INCLUSION, where people with Intellectual Disabilities can demonstrate their CAPABILITIES.
In addition, what makes this project special is the ability to count and include any person regardless of their abilities and to integrate a team as if it were just another category of a normalized club, making its members feel part of a big family.
