El Barco Project
What is El Barco?
El Barco is a socio-community and citizen participation project promoted by Fundación Personas, conceived as an open, accessible and diverse space that connects people with intellectual disabilities, families and the local community. It is a living laboratory of cultural and social inclusion whose purpose is to cultivate care, dialogue and the celebration of diversity, generating solid human networks that strengthen the close and daily social fabric, promoting individual and collective well-being.
At the heart of El Barco beats a deep interest in people and their potential, both at the individual and community levels: it is a place where each person matters and contributes. Through open spaces, creative and wellness workshops, and activities energized by initiatives such as ‘La Corriente’, genuine participation is encouraged and independent living is fostered.
Although it began as a pilot experience in Valladolid, El Barco was designed from the beginning to be replicated and adapted to different contexts and territories. Its inclusive, participatory and flexible approach allows activities and services to be tailored to the particularities of each province, generating unique and localized proposals. Currently, the model has been consolidated and, in addition to Valladolid (El Barco de la Esgueva), it is also being developed in Palencia, Segovia and Zamora (El Barco del Duero), where Fundación Personas has community inclusion centers and a consolidated territorial presence.
This living and adaptable methodology has favored the creation of new initiatives based on citizen participation, cultural mediation and collective construction, achieving a sustained and profound impact on the communities. Thus, El Barco has become a true laboratory of cultural inclusion, a source of inspiration for projects such as ‘La Corriente’, actively contributing to social cohesion and the exercise of cultural rights in the territory.
Who is it aimed at?
Mainly to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, although it is also open to families, neighbors, and citizens.
Its vocation is to build a shared space: it is not “for” some and “from” others, but with everyone.
What is the aim?
- Promote the full participation of people with disabilities in social, cultural, and community life.
- Promote independent living, with personalized support.
- Transform environments to be more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming.
- Reclaim art and culture as universal languages that allow people to express themselves, share, and create community.
- Strengthen human networks and combat unwanted loneliness.
What activities does it include?
The Boat is a dynamic space that combines:
- Creative, training, and wellness workshops: ceramics, engraving, dance, theater, textiles, plastic arts.
- Community gatherings: book presentations, masterclasses with artists, interdisciplinary events.
- Cultural programs in collaboration with museums and universities (National Museum of Sculpture, Patio Herreriano, UVA Museum of African Art, and the University of Valladolid).
- Inclusive radio and podcasts, made by people with disabilities themselves.
- Independent living processes: personalized support that promotes autonomy and social participation.
- Exhibitions and inclusive artistic projects, such as La Corriente, which expand real access to culture and generate new narratives.
Institutional collaboration
Institutional collaboration has been key to making El Barco a reality. The project was originally financed to Plena Inclusión by the Consejería de Servicios Sociales de la Junta de Castilla y León, through the Next Generation funds of the European Union, which allowed its start-up and initial consolidation. Currently, it is sustained thanks to a broad system of alliances that reinforce its continuity and projection, including collaboration with the University of Valladolid, as well as with museums (Nacional de Escultura, Patio Herreriano and Arte Africano UVA -Fundación Alberto Jiménez-Arellano Alonso), civic centers and exhibition and cultural spaces, third sector entities, neighborhood networks and different public and private institutions committed to inclusion and citizen participation.

* El Barco continues its journey beyond the initial funding, thanks to the strong commitment of Fundación Personas, the active involvement of the community and the collaboration of local networks. Although the grant allowed its start-up, the project is kept afloat with its own resources, alliances and the constant participation of those who believe in this space as a reference of inclusion, care and sustainable opportunities in the long term.
